  • 2011 Access and Inclusion Award

Date: 2011.06.27 | Category: Community, Events, News, Uncategorized | Response: 0

On June 7th, DDA was honoured with the 2011 Access & Inclusion Award. This award, presented by Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson on behalf of the city of Vancouver, recognizes individuals and organizations that demonstrate leadereship and commitment to enhancing accessibility, inclusion, universality and elimination of barriers that impede the full participation of persons with any type of disability in community life.

Alanna Hendren, our Executive Director, accepted the award with full pride as access & inclusion is what DDA is all about. Having receiving this from one of the most accessible and inclusive cities in the world was definitely more than just the icing on the cake.

We are all truly grateful and humbled to be selected; the award would not have been made possible without the support from the community and our partners, particularlly Jill Weiss of City of Vancouver, Ryan and Sharon Hill of West Coast Assistance Teams Society, Tamara Taggart of CTV, and Lisa Purdy of Evolve Media Consulting.

Our congratulations to Former Paralympic athlete Bruce Gilmour for winning the award in the individual category and Learning Disabilities Association Vancouver and Devon MacFarlane of Vancouver Coastal Health for the Honourable Mentions.

  • DDA in the Media

This coming Thursday, October 14th, will mark the 6th Annual Art Show for BC artists with developmental disabilities. This art show will take place at Heritage Hall from 5pm to 9pm, and is hosted by posAbilities (previously MAPCL). I’ve had the pleasure of attending the art show for the past couple of years, and I can definitely say it’s a great experience. In previous years appetizers and beverages were served, and I think the same will happen again this year. The Main Street Drop-In at the DDA was also a feature location for a media mention in the Metro. Below is the article featuring one of our artists and her artwork:

Come check out the art show and be prepared to bid on some of the most beautiful artwork you’ve ever seen!

  • United Way 2010 Campaign

    Date: 2010.09.20 | Category: Community, Fundraising | Response: 2

When the school year starts, so does many other events and campaigns! The United Way Campaign is kicking off soon again, and we hope to raise more money and awareness than we did in last year’s campaign. We’ve just met up with our loaned rep from United Way, Stephen, and he’s given us lots to think about and to plan for in our campaign. We’ll have our kickoff event in late October, early November. Last year, we had a raffle and potluck. This year we hope to do the same, but also hope to put a more refreshing spin. Our goal is to match and surpass the funds we raised in last year’s campaign.

We’re brainstorming what types of activities will get more people aware and involved with the campaign. Contests, games, hot meals, bake sales, etc. If you have any suggestions or comments as to what may have worked or not worked for you in the past, please leave a comment! We’d love to hear from you. We’ll keep you posted on our campaign in the upcoming months.

We hope to continue our support for the United Way of the Lower Mainland and its causes.
Remember, as United Way puts it: “Without you, there would be no way.”

Starting in October, our new Public Service Announcement will be available for viewing on CTV. We gratefully thank everybody who helped us put this together, including Sirota’s Alchymy, Abbe Gates and the Blazin’ Soccer Dogs, Savage Creek Golf Course & Driving Range, JAR Design Inc, and all the stars of our public service announcement. We’ll be adding a director’s cut of the PSA later this year, but for now, be one of the first to see our PSA here on our blog and Youtube site:
