We’re taking submissions for The Star again.

Anyone can write for the Star as long as you have something that you think is relevant to the DDA community.

    It can be about:
    - your experience with developmental disabilities (whether it be personally or of someone you know)
    - information and resources
    - letters to the editor (lingering questions from previous issues; articles that you loved, etc etc)
    - events that others in the DDA community will like (and can attend)

    …the list goes on.

    Send all submissions to jleung@develop.bc.ca!

Please note that not all submissions will be published, and that they may be edited for The Star.

  • Disneyland Vacation

Date: 2010.08.26 | Category: Community, Employment, Holiday Options | Response: 0

Like the many of you, I have been enjoying the Summer, and I’ve just come back from my vacation! I know the people at Holiday Options have already been having a great time at vacation this year!

You might be thinking what does your vacation have to do with the DDA community? Well, I’m getting to that. I went to Disneyland last week, and it proved itself to indeed be the happiest place on earth. Not only were there thousands of smiling faces, there was also a culturally diverse crowd. What stood out most for me was how accessible they made most of their rides and buildings for people with disabilities. In addition to that, they had very inclusive hiring of employees as they employed many people with developmental disabilities, and also employed those who required wheelchair assistance. Now, this may not sound like a big feat, but for a theme park, a world famous one at that, it warms my heart to see just how they are trying to include everyone so that everyone may enjoy their time equally!

Their commitment to hiring people with developmental disabilities and people from all walks of life reminds me of the employers at Jobs West who are also very willing to support this endeavor.

I hope to see more and more employers hiring inclusively and equally so that everyone may reach their full potential.

  • DDA Elves Help Out

Date: 2009.12.23 | Category: Community, Events, News | Response: 0

Here’s more guest-blogging from Jason continuing his story from Monday!

December 11th 2009 our staff set off to give back to charities, offering Christmas cheer in the form of new warm jackets and fleeces for those in need in Vancouver.

Jason Smith, DDT Assistant Bin Manager, had the pleasure of driving Santa’s helpers’ Truman, a Donation Centre Staff Member, and Blaine, a DDA courier, to charities in Downtown Vancouver and the East side of city.  Blaine and Truman were great representatives of DDA as they dropped off clothing for children, teens and adults.

Andrew from Covenant House was excited to be able to offer new warm clothing to the youth they care for. The staff from MSC 1092 was happy to receive youth and children jackets to help support battered women. The next stop was the Gathering Place where Truman and Blaine left behind 30 fleeces to help the homeless as they struggle through this winter. Other stops included: Gordon Neighborhood House, Union Gospel Mission and 1st United Church Mission

As the snow slowly fell on this day of giving I could see the pride that Blaine and Truman had in helping those in need on behalf of all of DDA.

Best wishes this holiday season from all at DDA.

    - Jason, Truman, & Blaine

  • United Way: Day of Caring @ Waterside Child Development Centre

    Date: 2009.10.05 | Category: Community | Response: 0

A couple weeks back, a team of 11 people from the Royal Bank of Canada volunteered with the United Way of the Lower Mainland (UWLM) as part of the UWLM Day of Caring to help the DDA. Day of Caring is a community partnership between United Way and community agencies and organization employee groups to help out at a local non-profit. Waterside Child Development Centre was fortunate to have these volunteers to help clean up the play area out back for the children.
