Playhouse and Mickey Mouse!
By Zahra Parbatani
Playhouse Child Development had a fun filled picnic with past and present families in attendance. It was heart-warming to see kids who previously attended the center come and laugh, eat and chat with us. The weather was spectacular and we had blankets set up outside and the teachers created a party setting with balloons, streamers and bingo dabber tablecloths. We also had a misty sprinkler set up to cool us off from some of the spicy and yummy food.
The kids really enjoyed a surprise visit from Mickey Mouse!! She entertained the kids with balloons of various shapes and colors and she also did face painting with sparkly designs. One of our parents and a co-workers spouse did a terrific job with the BBQ and kept everyone coming for more buns and burgers.

We also had a visit from George Stitch who came on behalf of United Commercial Travelers. We are fortunate to be one of many recipients’ to receive some funds from this terrific organization. He enjoyed talking with the families and meeting the teachers.
We were so happy with the energy and excitement that happened this evening that we cannot stop talking about it!! We hope to jazz it even more next time.

VOTE FOR DDA: Care to Change Contest
We are THRILLED to learn that DDA is a finalist for United Way’s Care to Change Contest.
Videos that exemplified how caring for others can create positive changes were encouraged. This is truly what DDA was all about, and as a result, submitted our PSA for consideration.
It’s not about the prizes, but about being able to advocate for something we strongly believe in and demonstrate how “perception” can change someone’s life. Please vote for DDA’s submission and advocate with us on our journey to enable people with devleopmental disabilities achieve their full potential!

2011 Access and Inclusion Award
On June 7th, DDA was honoured with the 2011 Access & Inclusion Award. This award, presented by Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson on behalf of the city of Vancouver, recognizes individuals and organizations that demonstrate leadereship and commitment to enhancing accessibility, inclusion, universality and elimination of barriers that impede the full participation of persons with any type of disability in community life.
Alanna Hendren, our Executive Director, accepted the award with full pride as access & inclusion is what DDA is all about. Having receiving this from one of the most accessible and inclusive cities in the world was definitely more than just the icing on the cake.
We are all truly grateful and humbled to be selected; the award would not have been made possible without the support from the community and our partners, particularlly Jill Weiss of City of Vancouver, Ryan and Sharon Hill of West Coast Assistance Teams Society, Tamara Taggart of CTV, and Lisa Purdy of Evolve Media Consulting.
Our congratulations to Former Paralympic athlete Bruce Gilmour for winning the award in the individual category and Learning Disabilities Association Vancouver and Devon MacFarlane of Vancouver Coastal Health for the Honourable Mentions.
