• Holiday Options Summer Social

  Yesterday our Training Room turned into a party room, as many of the people we support from our Holiday Options program came in for our Summer Social. Pizza and snacks were served, and the room was decorated with photos from all the Holiday Options adventures.

  

  Next year, we hope to have just a great Summer with the people we support in our Holiday Options program.

• Disneyland Vacation

  Like the many of you, I have been enjoying the Summer, and I’ve just come back from my vacation! I know the people at Holiday Options have already been having a great time at vacation this year!

  You might be thinking what does your vacation have to do with the DDA community? Well, I’m getting to that. I went to Disneyland last week, and it proved itself to indeed be the happiest place on earth. Not only were there thousands of smiling faces, there was also a culturally diverse crowd. What stood out most for me was how accessible they made most of their rides and buildings for people with disabilities. In addition to that, they had very inclusive hiring of employees as they employed many people with developmental disabilities, and also employed those who required wheelchair assistance. Now, this may not sound like a big feat, but for a theme park, a world famous one at that, it warms my heart to see just how they are trying to include everyone so that everyone may enjoy their time equally!

  Their commitment to hiring people with developmental disabilities and people from all walks of life reminds me of the employers at Jobs West who are also very willing to support this endeavor.

  I hope to see more and more employers hiring inclusively and equally so that everyone may reach their full potential.

• Holiday Options: Whistler 2009

  Holiday Options had the wonderful opportunity to take a few clients to Whistler from July 27th – 30th this year of 2009. Accomodations were at the “Legends Hotels” in Creekside, just minutes away from the exciting Whistler Village. The hotel contains an accessible media room, games room,, an outdoor swimming pool (with two hot tubs), and fitness room. Creekside itself is a great place to explore, with shops, stores and many surrounding lakes. When not investigating the attractions at Creekside, clients enjoy a gorgeous drive through the mountains, up to Whistler Village, one of the biggest tourist attractions of BC. The highlight this year was the breathtaking, world record-breaking “Peak2Peak” gondola experience, spanning the distance between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains (longest unsupported span of 2.024 kilometres!). The Whistler trip 2009 was a great excursion for clients and staff – a highly recommended one.
