Recycle with DDA for Earth Day
How are you celebrating Earth Day? There’s an easy way to get involved with Earth Day. You can locate a clothing donation bin and recycle your unused clothes by donating it to the Developmental Disabilities Association, or you can also locate a bottle donation bin and recycle your bottles as a donation to the Association. Over the last year, your donations have helped us not only generate necessary funds to maintain and develop programs for people with developmental disabilities, but have also helped us recycle:
- Over six million pounds of cloth items
- 1,473,017 pounds of housewares
- Over 400, 000 cans/bottles
Your donations help people with developmental disabilities and the environment. We’re a proud winner of the Recycling Council of BC’s Mobi award, and we strive to continue our sustainability initiatives in environmental stewardship.

Blogathon: Recycling
The Developmental Disabilities Association is primarily recognized for the programs and services we provide to people with developmental disabilities. That aside, we also strongly promote other initiatives to help our community at large. One of which is our recycling initiative. We have an entire page on our website dedicated to our efforts of being a sustainable organization, in addition to having won the 2009 Recycling Council of BC’s Mobi Award for excellence in environmental stewardship. We also started a green committee to encourage more green initiatives throughout our office. -
Blogathon: Another Random Item
Items should be in plural because I plan to share some short trivia with you all.
Did you know that we now have bins that accept clothing & books? It’s a combination bin. Keep your eyes peeled for that . Not to mention, we also have bins that just accept only books, only clothes, and only bottles/cans. DDA accepts housewares too, but those are only accepted through pickup, or at the drop-off station. See http://www.develop.bc.ca/contribute/donate-clothes/acceptable-items.html for a full list of items we accept!
Did you know that our association used to be called Vancouver-Richmond Association for Mentally Handicapped People (VRAMHP) instead of the Developmental Disabilities Association (DDA)?

DDA Day at the Nat
The DDA Day at the Nat was another success this year! It was my first time going to a baseball game, and although I was unable to stay for the entire event, it was plenty of fun going to the Nat and being a part of the festive atmosphere. The smell of freshly bbq’d goods and hot dogs wafted through the air along with streaming orange balloons tied to the trucks from our recycling and donation station.
Judy Yao threw the first pitch, and staff and volunteers threw all sorts of DDA swag into the stands with everybody scrambling to catch something. Miss Vancouver, Tracy Chand, was again in attendance to volunteer amongst many other people. I wish I was able to stay for more of the game, as I found out when I got back to the office to read twitter updates that @jessicarozitis was also at the event and did some live tweeting there too!
I had plenty of fun at the game and I look forward to seeing all the staff, clients, families and donors present next year! Congratulations to the Vancouver Canadians who wrapped up the game with a 3-2 victory over the Boise Hawks. Thank you everybody for your support, and thank you to everybody who helped make this event a success!
