  • Playhouse Halloween Party 2009

    Date: 2009.10.28 | Category: Child & Youth Services, News | Response: 0

This morning, I had the pleasure of attending Playhouse’s Halloween Party. Playhouse is one of the Developmental Disabilities Association’s Child Development Centre‘s nestled in the quiet neighborhood on Brant and East 27th.

This was my first Halloween party of the year, and my first time attending Playhouse, so I brought along my camera to take some pictures of the Halloween party. Kim Looi, the Manager at Playhouse, did a fantastic job organizing the party with her staff. The entire Child Development Centre was decorated with pumpkins, smiling faced paper ghosts, fake cobwebs and other Halloween themed decorations. Most of the children were also dressed in Halloween outfits.

The party started off with some excellent guitar music and singing with all the kids clapping and singing along. After the music came pumpkin pancakes and cantaloupe for the children.

Once the children were done their snacks, they headed off trick-or-treating at the different rooms at Playhouse. They’d knock on the door, yell “trick-or-treat”, and someone would open the door and give the kids healthy Halloween snacks.

The Halloween party was plenty of food, fun, and songs, with plenty of smiles on the faces of all the children. For more photos of Playhouse’s Halloween Party, view the Developmental Disabilities Association’s flickr site.

  • In-Service at Berwick

    Date: 2009.09.29 | Category: Child & Youth Services, News | Response: 0

This Monday, the Child & Youth services staff were all gathered at the Berwick Child Development Centre (at UBC) for an “In Service Day.” Parents who use our Child Development Centres may have noticed the closures at all the centres. In-Service Day is kind of like workshops and training sessions for the staff of all our different Child Development Centres.

I attended this In-Service Day for the first time, and the workshops they held had great variety. To kick off the day, there was a short session of Yoga where staff got to show off their flexibility. There were a variety of workshops that the Child Development Centre Facilitators could attend: Kindergarten Transition for Children with  Special Needs  into the Public School System; Boardmaker Software Training; Encouraging Caring Partnerships and Effective Communication between Early Learning Educators and Families;  and The Importance of Successful Social and Emotional Development in Childhood. The guest speakers were dynamic and open to any questions that our child development centre facilitators had, giving our staff a whole new insight and dimension to their current knowledge so that they could seamlessly deal with new issues of integration and childcare.

To end things off, we had a motivational keynote speaker at the end of it all, Lee Chamberland. She helped the staff loosen up, feel happy, and still be efficient at work. Feeling happy is the key to working well. She gave some really good advice and really got the staff to have a lot of fun (just take a look at the photos!).

What a great debut experience at the In-Service. I am looking forward to future invites to other In-Service Days so that I, too, can learn more about current challenges in childcare.

    Another week, another picnic!

Last week, Playhouse held their annual Summer Family Picnic, but this year was a little different. Leanna Logan, the manager at Playhouse for many years now, is going to be working at another Child Care Centre this year, so they made this picnic a farewell party as well.

Lots of parents showed up, and the children, parents and staff were very sad about Leanna’s departure. There was a beautifully handmade present for Leanna that had very touching photos of the kids and staff at Playhouse. Everyone signed a large handmade card too!

Aside from the sad goodbyes, everyone was having a ball eating all the delicious food and playing in the playground. Some parents even whipped out their guitar to sing songs with the kids! It was another fantastic picnic at Playhouse.

  • Berwick Annual Picnic

    Date: 2009.07.15 | Category: Child & Youth Services, News | Response: 0

Berwick Child Development Centre had their 2009 Annual Picnic a few weeks ago on their large and spacious play area. Berwick is the largest Child Development Centre of the Developmental Disabilities Association (located on the campus of UBC) and offers an integrated preschool program for children 3-5 years of age.

The weather for the picnic was just right; not too hot and not too cold. I’ve been to Berwick on a couple other occasions, but it was my first time attending the Berwick Annual Picnic and was surprised by how many people attended this event. There was music blaring, a bubble blowing machine going, two bouncy air filled play areas, face painting, and a myriad of other things for kids to play with.

I left before people even started eating, but even so, there were at least 40 or so families present at that time, each with their own children. It was a fun event to be at, and I definitely won’t be missing out on Berwick’s Annual Picnic next year!
